I had never made buttermilk pie. I have made chess pie, which I think is similar in its rather nondescript, soft, creamy texture.
This was pretty good.
And I must admit, I was pretty intrigued by orange pie.
I followed the recipe for the pie (and attached shortcut piecrust) to the letter…except I substituted 1/2 tsp of orange extract for the 1 tsp orange zest it called for (my pantry was all out of zest). Honestly it could have used more because the pie itself was not orang-y at all even though it also contained 2 TBSP orange juice.
The family thought it was pretty good, though. Since I forced them to eat their dinner first before they could get pie, they had to stuff it in. I’m happy to report that all were able to do it.
